Wath are Search Engines?

The search engine or the search tool is a program designed to search keywords made available by the user in documents and databases. On the internet, a search engine allows the search to happen by using keywords for worldwide hosted documents, depending on the standard language of a given country, as well as the search of articles related to those very same keywords, which are stored in websites, blogs, pages, etc.

The search engine was designed to aid the search for stored information on world web, inside a corporate network or a personal computer. It allows a person to request content, according to a specific criterion, using a keyword or a short text, and it answers back with a list of references and content that meet such criterion. By performing a query, the list of occurrences of that given subject is previously created by computer software, known as a Web crawler, which searches the entire Web looking for occurrences of a given subject in a page. When they find a page with lots of links, spiders plunge themselves into it, and they are even able to scavenge internal directories – those that have read permission for the site users in which they are working on.



Search engines generally use updated indexes in order to work quickly and efficiently. Generically speaking, search engines usually are referred as web search services, which look for information on Internet’s public network. Other types of it encompass search engines for the companies’ “Intranets”, personal search engines and mobile search engines. In any event, they can be applied in different environments, by relying on diverse selections and relevance, and the user may notice a difference among their operations. Some engines also extract available data in newsgroups, or open directories, such as DMOZ and much more. Unlike web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically. Most sites that call themselves search engines are, actually, an interface for other companies’ search engines.



Search engines work by storing information about a wide number of pages, which they gather from the global internet. These pages are retrieved by a Web crawler (or spider), an automate Web browser that follows every link that it sees. Exclusions can be carried out by using the robots.txt in the directory of each website or blog. The content of each page is then analyzed in order to determine how it should be indexed. For instance: the words are extracted from titles, headers or special fields called meta tags. Data about pages is stored in an indexed database for future searches. Some systems, such as Google, Baidú, Bing, among others, store all or part of the source page “referred to as a cache”, as well as the information on the pages, some even store each word from each page they found. This cached page always keeps the search text itself because, since it was indexed, it can be useful for the times when the current page’s content was updated and the search terms are no longer in it. This problem can be considered as a mild form of linkrot “loss of links on internet’s documents, i.e., when sites have ceased to exist or have changed their address”, and the way most search engines cope with it is by enhancing usability, thus satisfying the expectations of users, as the search term remains on the updated page. This meets the principle of pleasant surprise, or of appropriate response, as the user usually expects the search terms to be present on the updated and renewed pages. The increasing relevance of searches make these cached pages very useful, even when considering the fact that they can keep data that is no longer available elsewhere.



When a user conducts a search, by typically typing keywords, the system searches its index and provides a page list with the best match for the user’s search criterion, usually presenting a short summary that contains the document’s title and sometimes chops of its text. Most systems support the use of Boolean terms AND, OR and NOT to further specify the search. And the advanced functionality is called the approximate search, which allows defining the distance between keywords.



A search engine’s usefulness depends on the relevance of the result that it provides. While there may be millions of pages which include a specific word or sentence, some sites can be more relevant or popular than others. Most search systems use methods to create a ranking of results in order to present the best results in a way that is more relevant, substantial and emphasized. Taking into account the fact that a system decides what pages are the best matches, and in which order the results will show up, it greatly varies from one system to another. The methods also change themselves throughout time, as the Internet’s use also changes, and new techniques start to evolve – a permanent metamorphosis. Most search engines (90%) are commercial initiatives supported by ad revenue and promotion and, as a result of that, some search engines have the controversial practice of allowing advertisers to pay in order for them to have their listings showing up in prominent positions in search rankings.
